One more obvious difference amongst them is that Harrow and Wealdstone uses the word "and", whilst the others use the ampersand symbol "&"

Perhaps on signs (I haven't, and atm can't) check, but on the map all stations use &. For quiz purposes I've recently standardised on & for station names and 'and' for a conjunction of two locations (e.g. 'Between Chalfont & Lattimer and Chesham'). So, that it isn't the reason today.

Both true, but the odd one out isn't about geography on this occasion.

Chalfont & L is the only one built and opened by an Underground company (i.e. the Met - the others were opened by the NLR, GNR and LNWR) Or T&W is the only one not served by NR trains. Or FR&F is the only one not served by the Underground
Or perhaps one of them started out as just "X" or just "Y", and only became "X & Y" later?

Nope, that's still not the reason...

Is the odd-one-out anything to do with a change of station name? Chalfont & Latimer started life as "Chalfont Road". (But, then again, Totteridge might not have had its "& Whetstone" right from the start).

You are on the right lines... and that's all I'll say.

Am wondering whether it's actually the other way around (from what I thought in my previous posting).
Chalfont & Latimer started life as Chalfont Road. Totteridge & Whetstone started life as just plain Totteridge. Harrow & Wealdstone started life as just plain Harrow. Is Finchley Road & Frognal the only one of the four still to retain its original name?
