Sometimes a picture of an individual appears in a newspaper or magazine with the entire background of the picture removed. It is the image of the individual only appearing on the page. How can I remove the background of a picture in this way. Someone asked me to create a comedic image of a slim male facing the camera, stood between two very large females who were turned slightly inward towards the male. I was unable to do it because the background in the picture of the male needed to be removed to make the image more realistic. I do not want to incur Admin's displeasure by posting an example of what I mean but I hope my explanation is adequate. Removing the background in the picture of the male would have allowed the female subjects to be placed closer to the male subject, making the image itself a little more menacing.

GIMP can do that. Personally don't use it because of the crappy interface (which is about to improve apparently), but you should use it's equivalent of the magic wand.
